What to Expect from Counselling: A Holistic Approach (In Person or Online)

Starting counselling can bring up a mix of feelings — curiosity, hope, uncertainty, and sometimes nervousness. If you’re wondering what to expect from counselling, holistic counselling offers a gentle, whole-person approach that supports emotional, physical, and spiritual wellbeing. Whether you’re considering in-person sessions or online counselling sessions, this overview is here to help you understand how holistic counselling works and whether it feels like the right support for you.

What Is Holistic Counselling?

Holistic counselling views emotional wellbeing through the understanding that we are multi-layered beings. Our thoughts, emotions, body, nervous system, life experiences, and spiritual connection are all interconnected.

Rather than focusing solely on symptoms or “what’s wrong,” holistic counselling creates space to explore what is alive for you as a whole person. This includes emotional patterns, embodied responses, past experiences, intuitive insight, and the quieter inner knowing that often gets lost when we’re overwhelmed or in survival mode.

This approach honours that healing is not about fixing yourself — but about remembering, reconnecting, and gently unwinding what has become stuck or burdened over time.

What Happens in a Session?

Each session offers a confidential, supportive space where you are deeply listened to — without judgement, expectation, or pressure.

You’re welcome to bring:

  • Whatever feels present for you

  • Uncertainty, confusion, or not knowing where to start

  • Emotion, reflection, or silence

There is no requirement to explain yourself clearly or arrive with an agenda. Sessions unfold at your pace and are guided by what feels most important or alive for you in that moment.

Sometimes the work is conversational and reflective. Other times, it’s quieter — allowing space for feelings, insights, or sensations to emerge naturally.

A Unique Holistic & Spiritual Approach

My way of working is gentle, intuitive, and integrative. Alongside emotional exploration, I attune to the body, nervous system, and subtle energetic shifts that often accompany emotional states.

Where it feels supportive — and always with your consent — sessions may include:

  • Grounding or nervous-system regulation

  • Awareness of bodily sensations or emotional holding

  • Gentle visualisation or spiritual reconnection

  • Energy-based practices to support emotional release

This work recognises that emotions don’t just live in the mind — they are held in the body and energy field too. By working holistically, we allow emotions to move, soften, and integrate, rather than staying stuck or overwhelming.

Spiritual elements may be included in a way that feels right for you — whether that’s reconnecting with inner guidance, a sense of universal support, or simply feeling more rooted and resourced within yourself. Nothing is imposed; you are always in control of the depth and direction.

Online Counselling: What Is It Like?

Online counselling offers the same depth, confidentiality, and support as in-person sessions, with the added comfort of being in your own space.

Many people find online sessions:

  • More accessible and flexible

  • Less intimidating initially

  • Surprisingly deep and effective

You don’t need any special equipment — just a private space and a stable internet connection. Being at home can often help the body relax more quickly, allowing the work to unfold gently.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

There’s no fixed number of sessions, and you’re always free to choose what feels right for you.

Some people come for a single session or short-term support around a specific issue. Others feel drawn to ongoing sessions to explore deeper patterns or support a period of transition.

That said, many people find that working over a small container — such as six sessions — offers a supportive rhythm. It allows enough time for trust to build, themes to unfold, and gentle shifts to integrate, without feeling overwhelming or open-ended.

You’re welcome to work:

  • Pay-as-you-go, session by session

  • Or in blocks of six, if you’d like a sense of continuity and commitment

We can review this at any point, and there is no pressure to continue beyond what feels nourishing and supportive for you.

Feeling Nervous Is Completely Normal

It’s very natural to feel unsure before your first session. You’re welcome to take your time, ask questions, and arrive exactly as you are.

You don’t need to have clarity, answers, or a plan. Often, it’s the counselling space itself that gently brings things into focus.

If something in you is quietly curious or drawn to this work, that’s often enough to begin.

You don’t need to have everything figured out before reaching out. If you’d like support, or simply want to explore what’s possible, you’re welcome to book a free 20-minute chat via Fresha, or send me an email or call. We can take things slowly and see what feels right for you.
