Softening Into the Uncomfortable: Listening for Inner Guidance
Softening Into the Uncomfortable: Listening for Inner Guidance

There are moments in life when we find ourselves in a space of uncertainty, discomfort, or emotional intensity. When we are inside those moments, perspective can feel far away.
We may ask ourselves: When will this change? How do I move through this?
Sometimes, the most supportive thing we can do is soften into the experience rather than fight it.
Often, the way forward doesn’t come through pushing harder or trying to force clarity.
Seeing Beyond What Is Happening Now
When you feel you’re in the middle of a storm, our minds often try to solve or escape the discomfort as quickly as possible.
Small pockets of rest, or play can create space for something else to emerge — a deeper sense of knowing that was already present beneath the surface.
These moments allow us to listen differently.
Listening to the Wisdom Within
Many of us don’t think of ourselves as wise. We may look outward for answers, reassurance, or guidance.
Yet there is often a quiet inner awareness already present.
You might think of this as intuition, inner knowing, or simply the body’s way of sensing what feels right.
One of the first books I remember ordering as a child was How to Meet Your Guardian Angel. I was a curious child — perhaps a little unusual in the things that fascinated me. There was a quiet sense of knowing in me, even though I didn’t fully understand it at the time.
Children often carry a natural openness to the unseen, to imagination, and to intuition. They trust feelings and inner nudges in ways adults sometimes forget how to.
As we grow older, we can start to doubt those parts of ourselves. We look outward for certainty or assume that wisdom belongs to someone else.
But the truth is that each of us carries our own form of wisdom. The question is rarely whether it exists — but rather how we learn to listen to it again.
The Idea of Support Beyond Ourselves
Across many spiritual traditions, there is a belief that we are supported in ways we cannot always see.
Some people relate to this as spirit guides, angels, gods or goddesses. For others, it may feel more like the presence of past loved ones, animals, or ancestral support.
You might even think of it playfully as your personal “upgrading team” — supportive energies helping you evolve and grow.
Whether we view these ideas symbolically or spiritually, the deeper invitation is the same: to remember that we are not entirely alone in our experiences.
An Energetic Holding Space
When life feels confusing or overwhelming, it can be easy to see ourselves as stuck or lost.
But another way of looking at these periods is that they are spaces of energetic holding.
A time when something is shifting internally, even if the path forward isn’t visible yet.
Instead of rushing to escape the discomfort, we can experiment with gentle curiosity:
-
What is this moment asking me to notice?
-
What might emerge if I allow a little more space here?
-
Can I soften, even slightly, into what is present? Even 1% of it?
The answers may unfold slowly, through small insights rather than dramatic revelations and in fact it dosent need to bring any answer, the softening itself is your nourishing support.
Why Rest and Play Matter
When we are overwhelmed, we often believe we must work harder to figure everything out.
Yet the nervous system — and the intuitive mind — often respond best when there is space for rest and lightness.
Moments of play, creativity, or quiet reflection allow the mind and body to settle. This could look different to each one of us, some of my favourites include dancing, sitting in nature, connecting to spirit guides and meditation. Meditation really invites me to slow down, even if its a simple breathing from the stomach, breathing in a soothing colour to each part of you, your body, forehead, heart, back and so forth. Then all around you as if you are receiving a hug.
Other gentle ways to soften into the uncomfortable include:
-
Listening to soothing music,
-
Mindful pauses between tasks, this could be a nano second, or a few minutes
-
Being out in nature and listening to the birds, allowing your senses to bathe in what you can smell, see and feel
-
Connecting with supportive people or animals,
- Doodling, or colouring in
These practices aren’t about fixing anything — they’re about creating space to hear the quieter voice within you.
And in that settling, something deeper can begin to speak.
Closing Reflection
You may not always be able to see the full path ahead.
But within you there is a capacity to sense the next step.
Whether you experience that as intuition, inner wisdom, or spiritual guidance, the practice begins the same way:
By softening.
By listening.
By allowing the quieter voice within you to be heard.
If this way of listening to yourself resonates, you may also find it supportive to explore these themes in a guided space.
In my work as a holistic counsellor, I offer sessions that gently combine conversation, emotional awareness, and intuitive listening. Together we create a space where what is present — emotionally, physically, and energetically — can unfold at a pace that feels safe and supportive. This also includes personal techniques that resonate for you, so you can practice listening and connecting ongoingly.
If you’re curious about this approach, you can read more on spirit animal connection here, and listening to your heart wisdom here, both offer soothing support.
